Creative Paper for Creative Projects!

on
Do you ever wonder what type of paper you should use for your CREATIVE PRINT PROJECTS? Often people do not realize how many choices they have available. Then when it is time to choose, the many varieties of paper can be overwhelming. What color? What finish? What style? Paper selection can make a huge impact on your print project whether it is for yourself, your family, or your business.

There are so many factors that distinguish the different types of paper.

Finish - The finish is the surface texture of the paper, basically this is how the paper feels or the effect perceived.

Brightness – The brightness is the amount of light the paper reflects.

Weight – This is how much the paper weighs. It refers to its thickness and pounds.

Opacity – This is determined by how much ink will be absorbed into the paper or may show through. It is important to use a paper with good opacity so that you don’t have the “show through” on your projects.

Now let’s take a look at a few ways that you can get creative with different types of paper.

1.       Business Cards - Are usually printed on cover stock, sometimes called card stock. This is a more durable paper.  Most common business cards are printed on white cover stock because images are printed.

-   Examples of cover stock:

  • White
  • Colorful
  • Coated (gloss or dull)
  • Various Textures
  • Cast Coated Gloss (high gloss)
  • Uncoated
  • Coated One Side

2.       Invitations - There are so many invitation paper choices. We are going to list the most common types that we see  below:

  • 80 lb. white or natural (matte finish) are most commonly used for invitations
  • Linen – Cover Papers and Laid Finish
                 - Laid Finish has a textured surface that resembles a handmade paper.
  • Linen is a semi-rough paper that has the look of linen cloth with slightly lifted grooves that gives the paper a textured feel.

3.       Brochures – Are used primarily to inform you about a business. They typically are folded and you find them laying around on a table in a lobby, conference room or doctor’s office waiting room.

  • Coated (gloss or dull)
  • Uncoated
  • Royal Fiber
  • Linen
  • Laid

Coated papers work the best for reproducing fine detail and because of the hard surface, colors print much more vibrant than uncoated papers.

You may have not noticed that all of the samples provided are on some type of white paper. Just because your paper is white does not mean your final product has to be boring. White is so versatile! Using ink we can create the design you’re looking for without you ever knowing it was printed on white paper.

Colored paper and even ivory (off white) will affect how your image or logo turns out, so if your colors are important be sure you stay with white paper.

When choosing paper, it is also important to keep in mind that colors tend to dull on an uncoated paper whereas gloss intensifies your color.

Here at Creative we also have recycled paper choices as an option for those of you “going green”.

Choosing creative paper can really make the difference in your print project!  It is important to keep in mind that all of the paper choices are not always available at all times. Here at Creative Printing, we keep a large selection in stock; however we do order regularly to get the types of paper our customers would like. Another great benefit of working with your local print shop is you can come in and discuss your options and TOUCH and LOOK at the paper so you can get exactly what want. Let’s “Get Creative” together!
