Types of Book Binding

Have you ever written a book or thought about writing a book? Do you have trouble deciding which type of book binding you need? Now is time to consider your binding options. There are a wide variety of options when having a book or booklet bound. We want to inform you about the choices available and which is the most common choice for your project.

Plastic Spiral or Coil Binding

This binding method is a punch and bind system that uses plastic spiral that is coiled through the punched holes on the binding edge. Books can be bound up to 1 ½” thick, are very strong and crust resistant. The book lies flat when opened and can be folded back. Spiral or coil binding is often used for notebooks, technical manuals, presentations, calendars, and more. 

GBC or Plastic Comb Binding 

During this binding process, holes are punched along the left side of the document and then plastic combs are inserted in order to hold the pages together. Comb binding allows pages to lie flat when opened, however they cannot be folded back. Pages are easily replaced with GBC or comb binding. The combs come in a variety of colors and often used for cook books, training guides, financial reports, etc. 

Perfect Binding

This binding method of bookbinding is primarily used for less expensive books, manuals, and other simple documents. Perfect binding does not require any sewing in order to bind the book. A water-resistant adhesive is used to hold the pages in place by attaching them to the cover of the document.

Saddle Stitch

This type of binding is the simplest form of binding techniques, as well as the most widely used. Saddle stitch binding is perfect for dance books, materials for workshops, lightweight magazines, programs for graduation and promotional events. The pages are folded and then stapled along the spine. The booklet is then trimmed on all three sides. 

Tape Binding

In this process a cloth strip of adhesive tape is placed down the bind edge (spine) of the book and wrapped around approximately half an inch onto the front cover and back. Tape binding is a good choice for office documents, review books or other presentations.
